Data Management

Data Management comprises of a multi-dimensional spectrum of research directions that relate to leveraging any kind of data as a valuable resource of information.

This direction of the Intelligent Systems Laboratory considers Machine Learning techniques for the analysis of Big Data to support decision making processes, the exploration of automatic techniques for pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) Data Integration, and research that relates with the design of complex knowledge management systems that retrieve and integrate information from heterogeneous Linked Data sources published on the Web of Data.

Computer Vision & Robotics

One of the major objectives of the Group focuses on interdisciplinary research applied to the state of the art autonomous intelligent robotics and human-robot interaction.

We research several topics related to learning in computer vision. Our current focus is on visual localization and mapping (V-SLAM), image retrieval techniques and educational robotics.

Blockchain

Blockchain uses cryptographic means to continuously organise and link information, known as records, over a set of distributed machines.

Typically, a blockchain is managed by a peer-to-peer (P2P) network and organises records into blocks. The Intelligent Systems Laboratory focuses on studying the innovative blockchain concepts leveraged by the emerging of this new technology, and by its new application driven directions, such as, business, IoT, and data management. More specifically, we are focusing on the second generation of the blockchain i.e., the use of the blockchain technology as a distributed database, the extension of the technology to the outside world using off-chain oracles, and the programming capabilities introduced with smart contracts.

Networks & IOT

The Internet of things is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators e.t.c.
